From Our Family to Yours

Our hearts sincerely go out to all affected by Hurricane Sandy. While we were lucky to have relatively minimal damage to our store, this community is where our co-workers live, work, play and shop, so we are devastated by the results of this storm.

We appreciate all the calls and notes about the needs of the community in the storm's aftermath. As the Life Improvement Store, we're committed to our mission of improving people's lives at home, in ways big and small, even as we rebuild together. To that end, IKEA Brooklyn is partnering with national and local agencies to support those impacted in our area. Here's a brief overview:

  • Donating essential provisions to the Red Hook Initiative for residents in our Red Hook Community who are without electricity. These items include blankets, flashlights, candles, water, and food.
  • Supporting local businesses with basic furniture to help them rebuild and re-open
  • Donating furniture to our local firehouses impacted by Hurricane Sandy.
  • Providing space onsite at the store for FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) to assist Red Hook residents and for the SBA (Small Business Administration) to help local businesses.
  • Helping locally impacted IKEA co-workers secure temporary housing and providing them with home items based on their individual needs
  • Offering seasonal job opportunities at the IKEA Brooklyn store for displaced Red Hook residents who may have lost jobs due to the hurricane.

And, on a broader level nationally, we are working with Save the Children and the American Red Cross to help those in shelters throughout the NY/NJ region, providing tens of thousands of necessities and comfort items such as blankets, pillows, towels, children's play mats, and soft toys.

Although we know the treasures kept in your homes and businesses are irreplaceable, we hope these supplies and services will bring some warmth and comfort during these challenging times.

We will continue to provide updates while wishing for our community's safe recovery. Please know that you and your loved ones are in our thoughts and hopes for a quick renewal.
