On Your Own with OXO
OXOnians tend to be a young bunch - the average age in the office is 31.5, and over a dozen employees are 25 or younger. For many, OXO was their first (and only!) job out of college, so there are many of us that made our first apartment a home with OXO essentials.

As college graduation is looming, we thought it would be nice to share what we feel are some great tips for searching for, and moving into, your first apartment. Whether you're donning the cap and gown yourself, or whether your child is leaving the nest, you'll find all you need to make it on your own with OXO.

Check out some of these OXO essentials!

From our tongs to our can opener to our iconic Swivel Peeler (a bona-fide museum piece!), OXO makes virtually every list of essential cooking gadgets for the kitchen. Check out this list for all the basics.

Cooking Essentials

Let's face it, pasta and cereal are critical in those first few years on our own. Keep all your food fresh with our food storage containers. Modular shape and sizes make them perfect for small spaces.

Food Storage Essentials

Small spaces (and lack of a dishwasher or sizeable cabinets) make it necessary to keep your kitchen clutter under control.

Kitchen Organization Essentials

We all may dread cleaning, but it's an essential part of growing up. OXO's got some great quick clean and deep clean tools to elevate the task to a challenge, not a chore.

Cleaning Essentials

Often a first apartment means a shared bathroom and not much space. Look no further for tools to curb the clutter and keep it all clean - from shower caddies to toilet brushes to medicine cabinet must-haves.

Bathroom Essentials

Who's looking forward to laundry? Not you? Well, with OXO's drying solutions and an awesome hamper that conceals laundry and is comfortable to drag to the laundry room, you'll be glad you stopped by.

first apartment advice
Sage Advice from OXO's First Time Renters

Since so many OXOnians have recently been on the hunt (successfully) for a new apartment, we polled them for advice on that elusive "first place":

  1. Check out the apartment in person, if you can. If not, send someone you trust. It's not worth arriving with any surprises.
  2. DON'T be penny-wise, pound-foolish. Often a bit more in rent is the difference between having that drain fixed ASAP or ... "eventually."
  3. If you splurge on one thing, make it your mattress. A first place often means a first job, and you want to be at your best, well-rested.
  4. As awkward as it may be, start with a "Roommate Code of Conduct." It will save difficult conversations down the road about how inappropriate it is to eat the last of your Greek Yogurt
  5. Make it personal. This is, after all, your home - the place you come back to, often exhausted, every night. Make it a place you love to spend time.
Good luck!
