Whether or not artificial sweeteners actually contain harmful chemicals is up for debate. Even though, there isn’t enough evidence to close the book on it, some studies show that fake sweeteners can mess with the brain’s ability to gauge how much sugar and calories are in certain foods. For that reason alone, it may be best to avoid processed sugars (or sugar substitutes) and sweeten food with natural ingredients such as honey, maple syrup, or agave syrup.
