UP takes a peek at how our shuteye relays the story of 2013’s most electrifying events. In 2013, the UP community stayed up late tweeting about #occupygezi, gushing over Jennifer Lawrence’s Oscar® win, and celebrating the Sox victory in the streets of Boston.
1/20 OBAMA'S INAUGURATION The UP community in Washington D.C. lost 29 minutes of sleep the day that Barack Obama was inaugurated into his 2nd term as President.
2/3 BALTIMORE RAVENS WIN SUPER BOWL XLVII The UP community in the US lost an average of 8 minutes of sleep as the Baltimore Ravens beat the San Francisco 49ers 34-31 in Super Bowl XLVII, while UP wearers in Baltimore lost 46 minutes of sleep that night celebrating the win.
6/2 ISTANBUL'S TAKSIM GEZI PARK OPPOSITION When the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan dismissed opponents of the urban development plan in Istanbul’s Taksim Gezi Park as “a few looters”, the UP community in Istanbul lost more than 40
minutes of sleep.
The UP community in the US gets extra ZZZ’s on holidays. Labor Day is the holiday that prompted UP wearers to spend the most extra time in bed at 30 minutes. The runners up were Thanksgiving and Memorial Day.

Analysis is based on sleep data gathered from hundreds of thousands of UP wearers. Statistically significant anomalies were identified after controlling for geographic location, demographic information, day of week, and day of year.
