Bees Feed the World

More than 80 percent of the world’s wild plants, and about a third of our farmed food crops, depend on insect pollination to produce their seeds. Yet our populations of pollinators—including honey bees—continue to shrink. Worldwide, 35% of honey bees die every year; in some areas it’s more. Research continues, but it’s clear that agricultural chemicals are a leading cause of the collapse, along with poor nutrition and disease.

Pu’u O Hoku Ranch, on a vast, pristine swath of the Hawaiian island of Moloka’i, is a unique honey bee sanctuary. Here bees forage thousands of acres of certified biodynamic farmland and conservation land, protected from insectides, pesticides, and fungicides. The bees are healthy. They pollinate the ranch’s crops, which yield bountiful harvests. And they produce a honey that is exceptionally pure.

Pu’u O Hoku shows us what is possible when we farm in harmony with nature: Nature thrives. We hope that by offering honey from this farm, we draw more attention to what they do.

Limited supply; available online only.

“Can you imagine if we had to go out and hand-pollinate all our own food? I mean, there’d be millions of people out in the field with Q-tips, pollinating plants.”

—Mark House, beekeeper, Pu’u O Hoku Ranch, Moloka’i, Hawaii
