“The land is everything. If you don’t take care of the land, it won’t take care of you long term.” - Dave Hedlin, Hedlin Family Farm

Meet Dave and Serena Hedlin, third-generation owners of Hedlin Family Farm in Washington State’s Skagit Valley. Alongside their other crops, the Hedlins raise organic buckwheat for our Breakfast Grains. They like growing buckwheat because it fits their commitment to healthy land and soil. Organic buckwheat naturally suppresses weeds, improves soil health, requires little fertilizer, and thrives without pesticides. It also provides important, late-season nectar for honeybees. As the Hedlins pass the farm on to a fourth generation, their sense of responsibility for the land has only grown stronger. We’re proud to support their work.

Help save the bees

For thousands of years, honeybees and humans have evolved together in a partnership that benefits both. We plant crops with nectar to feed the bees, and the bees pollinate our plants—and make honey—to feed us. We can help bees thrive by supporting organic agriculture, which reduces the harmful pesticides that affect bees. And we can grow more crops like the organic buckwheat we use in our Breakfast Grains, which helps bees prepare for winter. We feel it’s the least we can do for our partners.
