The back of a wedding dress gets its fair share of attention and therefore should be conceived with this importance in mind. The charm of an artfully designed back lies in the intersection of cut, drape and detail (such as intricate seaming). I connect the back of the dress to the time of day of the wedding.
For morning ceremonies, the back should never fall below the level of the bra fastening and should be adorned with traditional details such as tiny bows or ribbons. For late-day and especially evening weddings, a softer, lower drape and more bare skin is alluring and adornment can include sequins, beads and crystals to reflect light and add glamour.
Remember, a bride’s exit is as noteworthy as her entrance. Choose the back detail of your wedding dress accordingly. - XO, Vera
Get Kaley's Wedding-Day Beauty Look
Want to get Kaley's wedding-day look for your big day? The newlywed recently published a video of herself getting ready before her New Year's Eve wedding to Ryan Sweeting. Fans can see a few of the special moments the bride-to-be shared with her friends and relatives, including her walk down the aisle and first kiss as husband and wife. Watch the video at Vera Unveiled.
For their New York wedding, the bride planned a classic white palette with a few modern twists. Pops of red accented various white details -- see her red bridal bouquet and a white to red ombre floral cascade on the tiered wedding cake. As a nod to her sparkly Vera Wang wedding gown, she featured a few sparkling details throughout the ceremony and reception, including her Christian Louboutin reception shoes! Dress Diary: Mallory
I love the drama of a gown that recalls another era, and a lace gown always affords that kind of look—classic and timeless. In Mallory, I used Chantilly lace, giving it a particularly heirloom quality.
Abstract chrysanthemum blooms run the length of the soft mermaid silhouette, which I punctuated at the base of the gown with a burst of exaggerated, hand-appliquéd corded lace. I wanted the layering of the two laces to have a collage-like feeling. And I love the way the blossoms seem to float along the hemline!
