This is how we survive this administration - and how we win

Is this your brand on Milled? You can claim it.

ACLU Supporter, I understand if you don't feel particularly patriotic today.

The Trump administration gives us countless reasons: It continues to attack our humanity through its treatment of immigrants and its hostility to reproductive rights, LGBT rights, and voting rights. It will likely nominate a hardened ideologue to serve on the Supreme Court, who will not check the brazen use of executive power. It will continue trying to erode the norms and attack the institutions of our democracy.

But if I can offer you one message today, it's this: There are good reasons for us to feel patriotic.

It's clearer than ever to me that our movement is fully engaging the mechanisms of our democracy no matter how hard Trump tries to dismantle them. We're mobilizing in the streets, we're suing in court, we're placing enormous pressure on Congress and this administration, and we'll be turning out in droves during the midterm elections.

I'm so incredibly proud of what we are accomplishing together, and I want to share with you this New York Times piece that illustrates what I mean.

Just think back to last week. Trump signed an executive order ending family separation a policy that he had claimed he could do nothing about. And then we solidified this win when the federal court ordered Trump to reunify the thousands of families he tore apart. We the people made him back down with our litigation and public outcry.

The ACLU is better positioned than ever to throw up a roadblock every time the Trump administration tries to violate our rights. We will continue to litigate every single unconstitutional policy. We will continue marching and delivering hundreds of thousands of calls and messages to Congress. And if our elected officials still have the gall to ignore the will of the people, we will make the midterm elections a referendum on where the country is headed, and educate the voting public on the importance of civil rights and civil liberties.

Pressure in the courts. Pressure in the streets. That's how we survive this administration and that's how we win.

ACLU Supporter, you make every part of what the ACLU does possible. I hope you read this article to see just how much we've accomplished together. I also hope you are inspired by our vision of this country that, together with millions of ACLU supporters, you can help achieve.

Thank you, and happy Independence Day.
