ACLU Action

Hi ACLU Supporter

It's been exactly one month since the Parkland massacre took the lives of 17 students and staff at Stoneman Douglas High School. Since then, the surviving students have inspired us by turning a heartbreaking tragedy into a thoughtful, strategic call to action.

We owe it to these students to show our support especially as politicians try to dismiss their calls for gun safety. So as students across the country plan to exercise their rights and plan walkouts, we need to make sure students and schools know what their rights actually are.

Watch and then share this quick video breaking down all the ways students can exercise their rights at school.

People know the ACLU for our work defending privacy, due process, equal protection, and freedom from unlawful searches. But we also believe, as even Supreme Court Justice Scalia argued, that Second Amendment rights are not unlimited. It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose. And while we don't often speak out on these issues, the ACLU is proud to call for reasonable limits on firearms in the interest of public safety.

Some schools are threatening students with suspension for walking out and banning them from participating. But the Supreme Court has affirmed that there is a space for students to express their opinions. Schools can discipline students for missing class, but they can't impose harsher punishment for political action.

Students are leading the way and showing us just how much is possible when we're not afraid to fight for our safety, our rights, and our future. We all need to use our voice and use our rights because that's what makes change.

Make sure everybody knows: You don't shed your constitutional rights at the schoolhouse gates. Whether you're participating in the walkout today or supporting from home, we all need to know our rights.

Thanks for your support,
