Welcome to the June edition of ‘The loop / Y ddolen’.

In this edition, you can find out more about our TV license petition, we're demanding the Government takes back responsibility for funding free TV licences for everybody over 75. We're delighted to announce our Age at Work project with Business in the Community Cymru (BITC) to support businesses in Wales to be more age inclusive. Why not get involved in our Big Knit campaign. The money raised helps us fight loneliness among older people in Wales and a big thank you to Wales & West Housing for raising vital funds for us to continue our work with and for older people.

Switch off campaign

For more than a million of our oldest citizens the TV is their constant companion and window on the world. And now it’s under threat.

The BBC has announced they will means test free TV licences from the over-75s. Means-testing may sound fair but in reality it means at least 650,000 of our poorest pensioners facing a big new annual bill they simply can’t afford.  But this is really the Government’s doing: they pushed the scheme onto the BBC without asking any of us what we think or providing the funding to sustain it.

Together, we must demand the Government takes back responsibility for funding free TV licences for everyone over 75.

Please sign Age UK’s petition today to ensure your voice is heard.

£400,000 National Lottery funding for older workers in Wales
The National Lottery Community Fund is investing more than £400,000 on a project to support older people to remain in or return to work in Wales.

Age Cymru, in partnership with Business in the Community (BITC) Cymru, has been awarded the grant for the five-year Age at Work project which is raising awareness of an ageing workforce and supporting businesses in Wales to be more age inclusive.

By supporting older people to remain in or return to work, the project is helping them to have enough income, stay connected, and develop new skills.

The project is therefore urging businesses in Wales to recruit, retain and retrain older workers. It’s also offering resources, advice and support.

In effect, the project is encouraging employers in Wales to embrace an ageing workforce who may need to juggle caring responsibilities or health issues with their work. It aims to show that a multi-generational workforce offers many benefits.

Age Cymru and BITC Cymru's counterparts in Northern Ireland and Scotland are also delivering the project in their countries.

Wales & West Housing

Thank you to the wonderful team at Wales & West Housing for raising an amazing £35,402.90 to help us achieve our goal to connect older people and combat loneliness.

The money was raised by Wales and West Housing’s 400 staff members over two years of fundraising with regular raffles, bake sales, dress down days and pennies donated from pay. Fundraising special events such as a sponsored Ride the Nation charity cycling challenge from North to South Wales and a rugby tournament, supported by former Welsh rugby players, helped to take the total to record levels.

Wales & West Housing's Group Chief Executive, Anne Hinchey, visited a Tai Chi group at the Pier Pavilion, Penarth, to see how the activities delivered by Age Cymru are helping older people to connect.

Says Anne: "At Wales & West Housing we provide homes for 22,000 people across Wales and almost one in five of our residents are over 65. When our staff voted on the charity they wanted to support, Age Cymru was a clear winner.

The charity is doing a fantastic job to make sure that as people grow older they don't miss out on the social activities they enjoy. With activities like Tai Chi and Nordic Walking the emphasis is just as much on socialising as it is on improving physical health. Through its range of campaigns it makes sure that the voices of older people in Wales are heard when it comes to the decisions that affect them."
