Is this your brand on Milled? You can claim it.

Welcome to the January edition of ‘The loop’, we'd like to wish you all a very Happy New Year / Blwyddyn Newydd Dda.

In this edition you'll find out more about our Spread the Warmth campaign, which can help you and your loved ones prepare for the cold weather. How having a stair lift made a real difference to Gordon and Evelyn. Are you a veteran aged 65 or over, then we want to hear from you about your needs and aspirations.

Don’t let mid winter be bleak for older people – Spread the warmth

Winter is certainly here. As temperatures drop from the unseasonably mild - to single figures south of zero, we ask that you spread the word on our winter health resilience campaign - ‘Spread the warmth.’
Each year many older people, particularly those aged 75+ are particularly vulnerable to the effects of cold weather, even a drop of a few degrees in temperature can be fatal.

Shockingly last year 3,400 additional older people died during winter. Very sadly, many of these deaths were preventable.

Each winter Age Cymru co-ordinates ‘Spread the warmth’ to inform, empower and protect older people of Wales. The campaign aims to raise public awareness of the many, often overlooked risks associated with colder temperatures both in and outside the home.

Age Cymru provides information and advice on support services that older people can access to help them to address these risks – from basic common sense approaches to keeping warm, safe and well to more specialist information and advice.

A free Winter Wrapped Up guide and thermometer cards to help monitor the temperature in your home and a number Information guides and factsheets are still available.

“Upstairs isn’t out of bounds anymore!”

Gordon, 92, and his wife Evelyn, 90, have been active in their community for many years and still live in the same house as Evelyn’s parents did when she was a child. Since retiring from the family furniture business Gordon has kept himself busy playing the E flat bass in his local brass band.

But a couple of years ago Gordon began to struggle with everyday activities like climbing stairs. He and Evelyn began to go out less and less and their wider family shared their concerns about their mobility, particularly around their home.

“I’d started to find climbing the stairs during the daytime more difficult. I’d got to a state where I was hanging on to both rails and going up one step at a time,” explained Gordon.

After having a stairlift installed Gordon’s confidence soon returned.

“I just wouldn’t have managed getting upstairs any longer. After it was installed I didn’t get breathless from climbing the stairs in the ordinary way. Upstairs isn’t out of bounds anymore!” he said.

Evelyn added: “It has meant we can stay living in our home. Gordon would have really struggled getting upstairs to the bathroom and bedroom without a stairlift, in fact I just don’t know how we would have managed.”

Gordon’s straight stairlift was installed by an engineer who made sure the couple were happy with how to operate it safely before he left after just a few hours. They chose a Sand coloured seat to co-ordinate with the décor in the hallway and opted for a model with a manual swivel seat and footplate, and two remote controls so the lift can be called from either the ground or first floor level.

“The stairlift has been a real life changer. If you’re thinking of getting one, my advice would be to get it fitted as soon as possible! It means I have more energy to do the things I want to do, rather than the things I need to do,” said Gordon.

To find out more about how a stairlift could give you the confidence to use your stairs safely and stay in your family home for longer, contact Age Cymru on 0800 055 6387 to arrange your free in-home assessment.

Armed Forces Veterans in Wales aged 65 or over, with unpaid caring responsibilities: Help us build a picture of your needs and aspirations.

Project 360° is a partnership between Age Cymru, veteran’s charity Woody’s Lodge, and Age Alliance Wales; an alliance of 23 national charities in Wales. The project is focused on improving services for military veterans aged 65 or over and has been talking to people across Wales about their experiences.

Through our initial research we found that over one third of the people we spoke to had unpaid caring responsibilities. This led us to want to find out more about what impacts on the day to day lives of these veterans who care for a loved one, what helps them, where they go for support and what they may need which they don’t currently access.

The project is inviting anyone who is an unpaid carer, aged 65 or over and was in any of the UK armed forces (including national service, reservists or saw a military operation whilst in the merchant navy); or is an unpaid carer for anyone who is 65 or over and was in any of the UK armed forces; to let us know about their support needs and aspirations.

We will then use this feedback we gather to improve services for older veterans across Wales through the Project 360° partners.

Simply call 029 2043 1555 for a paper copy of the survey which can be returned free of charge, or complete it online via the button below.

Or you can invite the project team along to talk to your groups or organisation about the work we are doing.

For more information contact the project team on 029 2043 1555 or send us an email

Thank you for your time and help with this important research

Project 360° is funded by the Aged Veterans Fund through LIBOR money.

Leave a world less lonely

With a gift to Age Cymru in your will, you can do so much to make sure older people have the support they deserve in the years to come.

It's easy to continue supporting your favourite causes with a gift in your will. When we make our wills, we naturally want to make sure our loved ones are cared for. But through your will you can also leave something special to the many thousands of older people in Wales who have no one to turn to when times get tough.

Gifts in wills are vital to Age Cymru, and mean that years from now, people in later life will have someone to turn to if they’re feeling vulnerable, lonely and forgotten. It’s the reassurance that, when the time comes, we will be there to help with everyday needs, so people can continue to live with dignity and respect.

Leave support and friendship with a gift in your will
Thanks for your ongoing support.

Best wishes
