Nordic Walking is one of Europe's fastest growing forms of physical activity and is a great way of staying healthy.

You walk using a pair of specially designed, lightweight poles that provide additional support meaning you get more from the exercise. Nordic Walking provides a numbers of benefits above that of normal walking. It exercises 90% of your muscles increasing strength in your legs, arms, shoulders, chest and back.

Nordic Walking is less tiring than normal walking and it can increase your heart rate by up to 13% meaning that you receive greater benefit through less effort.

If you’d like more information about Nordic Walking or want to know if there’s a class near you, please contact our Physical Activity team.

New Chair for Age Cymru

We’re delighted to announce we’ve appointed Dr Malcolm Fisk as our new Chair for the next four years.

Dr Fisk has extensive experience of working with older people having set up Wales’ first Care and Repair Service in the Rhondda, where he has lived for the past 35 years.

He also chaired the Welsh Government’s National Partnership Forum for Older People that helped shape the Strategy for Older People and establish the Office of the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales.

“I am under no illusions that leading this charity for the next four years will be a huge undertaking as we look for answers to some very difficult questions such as how should Wales establish a fair and effective system for care at home and in care settings. We also want our health and social services working together more effectively so that older people are not stranded on hospital wards waiting for a care package that will return them safely to their communities.

We will work with local and central governments to help make Wales more accessible and age friendly, offering both opportunities and basic services that are necessary for all of us to live fulfilled lives.

“And of course we will continue to celebrate the huge contributions that older people make to Welsh communities everyday whether as child minders enabling family members to continue working, older workers offering younger colleagues their experience and expertise, or as volunteers running sports and social clubs the length and breadth of the country.”

More money in your pocket

Every year, it’s estimated that billions of pounds of state benefits intended for people on low incomes goes unclaimed by older people. Our 'More money in your pocket' guide can help.
If you’re 60 or over, you could be entitled to benefits that you haven’t been able to claim before. These can help you keep your independence and improve your standard of living by helping with housing costs, care needs or general day-to-day living expenses.

So it’s well worth reading through this guide to see whether you’re claiming all that you’re due.

Reminder - can you help us by completing our ‘Community Calculator’. We’re asking you to score your community and the things that make somewhere a good place to live and work can change as we get older.

It’s vital that the needs of older people are considered to ensure we all have the opportunity to achieve the best health, wellbeing and quality of life that we are able.
