Spread the Warmth
So Winter has finally arrived here in Wales and we’re busy ‘Spreading the warmth’ to older people across the country.

We’re asking you to help us ‘Spread the warmth’ to your families, friends and communities by spreading the word on how to protect your health and prevent winter related illness. You could even safe a life.

The Winter climate brings lots of health risks, particularly to those who have asthma, heart disease, have suffered a stroke, living with conditions that affect blood flow to the heart, or brain, living with dementia. So here are a couple of things you can ‘spread the word on.’

Beware ...Chilly air

Colds and the flu, chilly air, dusty decorations, smoke from log and coal fires could all be triggers for wheezing, coughing and asthma attacks. Be mindful of these triggers.

Protect yourself when out and about. Wrap a scarf loosely over your nose and mouth to warm the air before you breathe in.

Rudolph the red nose effect

Most of us will battle two or three colds and sore throats each winter. But you can help lessen your chances of catching the dreaded lurgy by eating well. Your body needs good nutrition at all times, but especially during winter. Eat lots of fruit and vegetables of all varieties and colours. Aim for at least five portions of fruit and vegetables each day, so that you’re getting plenty of nutrients and vitamins to nourish you and build your immunity. Food is the natural way to keep bugs at bay and keep you glowing from the inside out.

Top tip: Remember, frozen, dried and tinned fruit or vegetables are as good as fresh, if not better. (Be mindful to choose fruit that is canned in fruit juice as opposed to syrup, which can have a lot more sugar in).

Flu is a virus we can help protect against. A simple vaccination is the best protection we have against the flu virus. It’s particularly important to have this if you already have a health complaint or aged 65+.

There’s so much more that we can all do to help protect our health over the coming winter months. As the old adage goes ‘prevention is better than cure.’ If you’re concerned about keeping yourself and/or loved ones warm and well this winter, call Age Cymru Advice on 08000 223 444 or visit our website.

Inspirational story

At the wonderful age of 80, Maria Cobar said "It's never too late for anyone to find love" after she walked down the aisle for the very first time to marry 96-year-old Carlos.

The couple met a year ago at their care home when Carlos moved in just across the hallway from Maria.

Says Carlos "It was love at first sight, when I saw her my heart filled with joy!"

Carlos and Maria started spending every day together and fell in love. It wasn't long before he asked Maria to take his hand in marriage.

On their wedding day, Maria was over the moon. "I've been lonely for many years, this feels wonderful. I have butterflies in my stomach I'm so excited!"
