ALLRIOT kickass political t-shirts ALLRIOT Hey This Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn artwork is the latest addition to our Thought Criminals range, and December 11th marks 100th anniversary of his birth. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn was the first to chronicle the crushing brutality of daily life in the Soviet Union’s prison camps. He was awarded a Nobel Prize for his novel One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich (it's a fascinating read!). It was the only novel he was allowed to publish in the Soviet Union. His other works had to be published in the West, most notably Cancer Ward (chilling to the bone), and The Gulag Archipelago (Time magazine called it the most important book of the 20th century). I think that the enduring quality of Solzhenitsyn's writing is that it shines a light on our own society, as well as our own humanity. The quote featured here is taken from The Gulag Archipelago: “The line between good and evil runs not between cultures, religions or creeds, but through every human heart.” Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn was not a perfect man. I disagree with some of his views. However, he was a hugely important voice during the tumultuous 20th century, not to mention a jaw-droppingly talented writer. This is my tribute to the great man. Tuesday was the day where it all happened. The Orange King was exiled to the ‘shithole’ of his choice — the frigid tundras of Siberia or alongside the locals in a random dot in a Pacific archipelago. Hillary Clinton was given a permanent press gag and slapped with a restraining order by CNN and MSNBC. Warmongering Republicans were embargoed from politics and business. Antifa and the Alt-Right took off their black hoodies and Confederate flags to embrace on the battlefield. Over 550,000 Americans reentered society and received clothing, food and shelter. The American people made it happen. One vote. One cast ballot made the difference. Citizens breathed a heavy sigh of relief at the thought of a world where peace was finally possible. ALLRIOT Hey ALLRIOT was built around the idea of “everyday activism”. For me, it means a commitment to making a positive change in the World on a daily basis. ALLRIOT Hey What happens to our humanity when we choose to ‘other' one another? Can you imagine growing close to someone whose people have driven you from your home and turned you into a refugee in your own country? 22 teenage girls from Israel and Palestine were flown in to a camp in rural New Jersey, where they would live together in the face of these questions. As part of a program called Building Bridges for Peace, these young people were called upon to examine beliefs that seemed central to their identity. Even though they had volunteered for the program, the girls were initially mistrustful of each other, and sometimes overtly hostile. Yet from this harsh beginning, some of the girls left camp having formed deep bonds, and for most, it became impossible to see each other as the enemy. As one Israeli girl put it, “If I don't know you, it's easy to hate you. If I look in your eyes, I can't.” I loved this quote so much, I put it on this t-shirt. To me it makes a powerful statement that hatred is the path of least resistance. This Valentine's, we're putting the L-O-V-E back in revolution by donating 10% of proceeds from the sale of this shirt to Building Bridges for Peace.
