June Market Insights: Wholesale Prices Down, Auction Activity Up

Wholesale Price Changes by Segment

June Recap

Despite steady auction activity (56% conversion rate), wholesale prices experienced significant depreciation throughout June. The rate of decline accelerated in the first two weeks, impacting all segments with Midsize Cars and Midsize Crossovers/SUVs being hit the hardest. While depreciation slowed slightly in the third week, it remained above pre-pandemic norms. This trend continued into the last week of June with prices dropping at about half a percent per week, exceeding the typical seasonal average.

Car Segment

Car prices in June saw a significant drop across most segments, with depreciation accelerating throughout the month. Subcompact cars were hit the hardest, while sporty and premium sporty cars held steady early on but eventually joined the downward trend. Even older luxury cars weren't spared, with depreciation picking up in the last weeks of June.

Truck & SUV Segment

Truck and SUV prices also saw a depreciation trend throughout June. While the decline started slower than cars, it picked up steam by mid-month with all segments experiencing some drop. Compact and Mid-size crossovers, along with Sub-Compact Luxury crossovers, were hit especially hard with accelerated depreciation rates. Even minivans, which had been relatively stable, saw a significant drop towards the end of June. The only bright spot was newer, 0-to-2-year-old small pickups which actually saw a slight price increase.

Used Vehicle Retention Index Decreased In May

Used Vehicle Retention Index

“In May, the market took a different turn as Black Book observed a downturn across nearly all of the 22 vehicle segments it monitors, which was reflected in the seasonally adjusted retention index,” stated Laura Wehunt, Vice President of Analytics at Black Book. “Throughout May, the wholesale market largely mirrored the stability typical of a pre-pandemic year across most categories. The exception was the Premium Sporty Car segment, which stood out with a notable seasonally adjusted index increase of 1.4% compared to the previous month. On the other end of the spectrum, the popular Compact and Mid-Size Crossover categories experienced the steepest drops, with each declining by 2.7% from their April figures.”
