It is our responsibility as Black parents, educators, and community members to make sure our children are aware of their importance. There’s a common saying that states, “The race that does not build its own will be controlled by those who do.”
Below, we have created a list with quick tips that help you plant those positive seeds that your children can water when they need to.
How To Encourage Your Children To Grow In Their Blackness
#1: Indulge in books that promote black excellence: Our Black Year:This is a thought-provoking book perfect for Black families about self-help economics and its importance in supporting black-owned businesses. When we support Black-owned businesses, we let our children know they too can be business owners themselves.
#2: Empower your children to embrace their natural hair: Black hair and styling are a significant part of black culture. By helping your child style and caring for their hair, you can help them connect with, and take pride in, that part of their cultural heritage.
#3: Teach your kids that mental health is as important as physical health: The stigma around seeking mental health care is a substantial barrier in the Black community. This is why it’s essential to create an atmosphere of comfort and awareness for your children regarding mental health.
#4: Integrate products made specifically for the diverse needs of young melanin-rich skin: Kids skincare is just as important as adult skincare, and although younger melanated skin is smoother, it is far more sensitive. Stay tuned for our new release, Melabébé that caters to our melanated babies on Friday 👀
