Reducing Waste, One Cacao Fruit at a Time
The cacao industry at large generates an immense amount of waste, daily. To help understand the process, and where Blue Stripes comes in, we first have to draw a broad picture of the industry’s production line. Generally speaking, the cacao industry focuses on manufacturing one product: chocolate.
To do this, it utilizes one very specific part of the whole cacao fruit: the beans. After the beans are extracted, the rest of the fruit is discarded -- including the pod husk, pulp and bean shell. This translates into 70% of the whole cacao fruit being wasted. The carelessly discarded parts are nutrient-packed and highly valuable natural resources.
We stood by and witnessed this phenomenon for a long time, until finally we decided to do something about it. Our love for the heritage and history of this incredible fruit has led us to create our trilosophy: wellness, equity, and sustainability. It is through this trilosophy that we manifested our new line of cacao superfood products, which utilize all of the different parts of the cacao fruit once ignored. Thanks to this, we’re able to create pure, superfood-powered products, all of which are gently placed in recycled packaging.
This process not only promotes wellness, but it is also our way of ensuring an equitable relationship with our farmers, who are now able to profit from 100% of their produce, rather than 30% prior.
