  The Weekend Edition
Good morning, Friend.

It looks like it's going to be a full-house Thanksgiving for me in a couple of weeks. We've got family, friends, and new neighbors dropping in throughout the weekend, which is what the holiday is all about. It's also the season to reflect on life's bounties and to show thanks for our good fortune with special remembrances to charities and other causes.

The contributions of some special authors in the BookBaby community extend far beyond the holiday season. They're using their writing gifts to give back to their communities in a big way.

Tara Trompetter's organization has published two children's books in honor of her son, an adventure guide in Thailand, who lost his life in a rock-climbing accident. She started the Live Like Ben Foundation and has used book proceeds to build a school and provide water filtration in a village in Thailand. Written by ambassadors Niki and Alex Sinsawas, the foundation published The Adventures of Winnie Moo last year, and their latest book, The School That Love Built, is now available on BookShop.

The PALS organization provides support to families and individuals coping and living with Down syndrome. The Congratulations Project was conceived by PALS' executive director Jenni Newbury Ross and released on World Down Syndrome Day in 2018. The book features a forward by Meredith Vieira and contains handwritten, original letters from individuals with Down syndrome addressed to expecting or new parents whose baby has received the same diagnosis. All proceeds of the books go toward the production and distribution of additional books to doctors' offices, hospital waiting rooms, and other Down syndrome support facilities.

I've written before of the good work performed by Caleb Mason and his publishing imprint, Publerati. With every book purchased, Publerati donates 15 percent of its royalties to the Worldreader Organization and shares all of its titles with teachers and children in developing nations.

I'm eager to spotlight other authors or publishers who are supporting great causes around the world. If you know of other community-minded authors, please let me know. Send me an email at, and I'll spread the word.

The holiday season also means great parties, so it's a good time to share these timely tips from our friends at BlueInk Review on how to host a book launch celebration. I think tip No. 9, mingle with your guests, is the most important!

All the best,
Steven Spatz
