It's that time of year again when many of us will have holidays booked and are about to jet off to sunny foreign climes, or head off to the campsite for a staycation.

Β Β Β

So you’ll be madly rushing about doing all your preparations. Pets of course need to be taken care of while you're away, and that includes the aquatic variety. You don’t want to be sunning yourself on a beach in the Med and suddenly thinking β€˜Have I fed the fish?’

Β Β Β

One solution of course is to ask a friendly neighbour to pop in and feed them while you're gone. There are a couple of things to keep in mind if going down this route though... (Continued below).

Key Features and benefits of Auto Feeders:Β

  • Easily feed your fish while away on holiday or other absence
  • Deliver a consistent feeding regime and monitor exactly what your fish receive
  • Free up time in your busy schedule by taking care of the task of feeding, automatically
  • Avoid green water and other problems by avoiding over feeding or under feeding
  • Feed multiple times per day, even at times that would not otherwise be convenient

Β

Asking a friendly neighbour to pop in and feed your fish while you're gone is a great option, and if your neighbour is familiar with fish feeding regimes all is good. If however they don’t have a pond themselves and aren’t so sure how much they should feed, this can potentially lead to problems. It can end up meaning that your kindly, friendly neighbour tends to overfeed, saying β€œβ€¦they still looked so hungry to me.” An easy mistake to make, especially in these summer months when your fish may be extra active, and in extreme heat may be spending more time at the surface. Gasping for a bit of extra air could well look like a hungry fish asking for food to the uninitiated!

Β

Of course a sudden big increase in the amount of fish wasteΒ in your pond can lead to all kinds of problems including green water, and even poorly, or expired fish! A good idea is to provide your feeding friend with some sort of measure so they know exactly how much food to give each day. This can be easily improvised by use of something like an empty yoghurt pot, cut down milk carton or drinks bottle.

Β

Take your improvised container and mark it at the correct level for the ideal amount of feed for one day. Instruct your friend to only fill to that level and never be tempted to give the fish even a little bit more. That way you can be sure you’ll come back to a pond that still has decent water quality, happy healthy fish - and you won’t fall out with Bob and Phyllis next door!Β

Β

If however you don’t want to leave anything to chance and want a way to stay in control even though you’re away, then an auto feeder is the answer! There’s a range of models available, that can all be set to different feeding patterns.Β

Β

Usually an auto-feeder sits next to the pond, or hangs over it on an arm. They will dispense food of the type, frequency and amount that you specify (depending on each particular feeder’s capability). Some feeders will just dispense 1 type of food once or twice a day (which is often sufficient), whereas other β€˜Pro’ models can handle virtually any type of food, have large hoppers and can feed up to 20 times a day.Β

Β

You need to think carefully about which is the right option for you. Do you need to feed several times a day, or just once? Also consider the hopper size. Be sure to choose a feeder with a large enough capacity to keep feeding for the whole time that you’re away. (Remember you can always call us on 01904 698802, or hit the β€˜Chat’ button on our website for expert advice).Β

Β

Top tip: An excellent idea is to test out your feeder for maybe a week, before you go away. That way you can be sure that everything is working properly and you can fine tune any settings that you need to.Β

Β

It’s also worth giving your pond pumps, filters, brushes and air pumps a good check before you set off. You need to minimise the chance of any blockages or other issues occurring as you might not be around for some time to rectify anything that does occur.Β

Β

Top Tip: Of course many people like to use auto-feeders even when not on holiday. This is because it allows you to easily deliver a consistent feeding regime, with accurate quantities being delivered at regular times.Β

Β

Follow these simple tips and you can be sure of returning refreshed from your R&R without being faced with a green pond disaster or even worse.Β

Β

Enjoy your pond!Β
