The final draft has been published: what's changed and why it matters

The Quality Advantage | May 2026
In this edition, we're focusing on the latest ISO/FDIS 9001 updates, what they could mean for your organization, and training to help teams prepare for the transition to ISO 9001:2026.
Below, we outline the key expected changes, what they mean for your QMS, and how you can begin preparing now.
While no significant or technical changes are currently expected between the FDIS and the final ISO standard, some editorial refinements may still be made.
When the revised standard is published, it will trigger the start of a certification transition period, and we will share detailed transition guidance at that time.

What’s changing in ISO 9001:2026?
Climate change considerations become explicit
The FDIS continues alignment with the ISO Harmonized Structure, which includes the 2024 climate change amendment (Clauses 4.1, 4.2):
Your QMS must explicitly consider whether climate change is relevant to (1) organizational context and (2) interested parties’ requirements, so disruption drivers are formally assessed, not assumed.

Key areas of emphasis in the draft standard

Quality culture & ethical behaviour
Stronger emphasis on leadership driving a quality culture and ethical behaviour across the organization.

Risk and opportunity
Clear separation of risks and opportunities, supporting more structured decision‑making and proactive improvement.
-
Management of change
Enhanced requirements for planning, implementing, and evaluating change, with greater focus on impact and effectiveness.
-
Organizational context & stakeholders
Greater integration of context, interested parties, and strategic direction throughout the requirements.
-
Annex A
Expanded guidance to clarify intent and support consistent interpretation and implementation.

How these changes can help you
The FDIS enhances ISO 9001, making it clearer to interpret and simpler to integrate with your organizational goals.
It can help you:
- Align your QMS more closely with business strategy and objectives
- Strengthen decision-making through clearer risk and opportunity management
- Improve organizational resilience through better-controlled change
- Build trust and competitiveness with a stronger focus on culture, ethics, and performance
How to prepare for the expected changes
We recommend reviewing your current QMS against the FDIS to understand the practical impacts. And assess whether your team has the knowledge and skills to implement the changes effectively, for maximum benefit.
