The Safety Scoop: Understanding risk before it becomes harm

May 2026

This month, we’re asking: 'What do 23,000 accidental deaths tell us about workplace risk?'

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents:

  • 23,000 people die from accidents each year in the UK
  • Death rates have risen by 8%
  • People in the North are twice as likely to die as those in London

In fact:

  • The North-East sees 44 deaths per 100,000 people
  • London records just 19.5 per 100,000

While this might feel like a public health issue, the same patterns exist in organizations like yours.

The key findings you need to know

Falls, exposure to hazardous substances, and road incidents are among the leading causes of accidental harm and mirror workplace risks.

And just like the national picture, some people are more exposed than others, whether through the roles they do, the environments they work in, or the level of support around them.

Evidence from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents shows:

  • Safety representatives act as an early warning system
  • Workplaces with representatives see fewer injuries

The insight you need already exists – it’s with your people.

So what’s the takeaway?

Workplace incidents rarely happen in isolation

Accidents follow patterns and those patterns can be prevented with the right systems in place (such as ISO 45001). Organizations can shift from responding to incidents to identifying and reducing risk before harm occurs.
