From the front lines to the home front: marking V-E Day

This May marks the 75th Anniversary of Victory in Europe (V-E Day) during the Second World War. This stamp issue honours two Canadians who exemplified bravery on the battlefield and determination here at home.

Private Léo Major single-handedly liberated the German-occupied Dutch town of Zwolle. Veronica “Ronnie the Bren Gun Girl” Foster inspired hundreds of thousands of Canadian women to work in the nation’s war industries. We salute them.

Canadian Originals: Group of Seven Stamps & Collectibles

This collection of seven stamps and Official First Day Covers celebrates the 100th anniversary of the first exhibition by the original Group of Seven painters. In May 1920, Canadian artists Lawren S. Harris, A.Y. Jackson, Franklin Carmichael, Frank H. Johnston, Arthur Lismer, J.E.H. MacDonald and F.H. Varley displayed their unique works as a group at the Art Gallery of Toronto (now the Art Gallery of Ontario). Over the years and decades that followed, their paintings have become a part of the fabric of Canada’s cultural landscape. Each stamp features a work by one of the artists, while the Official First Day Covers depict them as they painted.

Two new stamps mark 100 years of radio

This new release marks the 100th anniversary of the first radio broadcast in Canada on May 20, 1920. The booklet of 10 stamps includes five sets of two adjoining designs that depict 1920s-era broadcasting and receiving equipment. The Official First Day Cover recounts the story of that first historic broadcast – a demonstration by the Marconi Wireless Telegraphic Company for a gathering of the Royal Society of Canada at Ottawa’s Chateau Laurier Hotel – and of the rapid rise of radio as a medium that connected Canadians like never before.

Eid Stamps

This new stamp issue marks the two most important days in the Islamic calendar: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. The new design includes a layering of common elements in Islamic geometric design – surrounding Arabic calligraphy that reads “Eid Mubarak”. This common greeting means “have a blessed Eid.” The stamp and Official First Day Cover were issued ahead of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan at sunset on May 23, 2020. Eid al-Adha marks the end of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.
