ITS A MEDIEVAL SPACE RACE!FEATURING THE APOLLO PROGRAM, VOYAGER, AND LAIKA
We rarely feature the work of other artists in Chop Shop Store. The most notable exceptions would be Yugen Handmade jewelry (currently on vacation), Patrick King’s Typography Shop and now Ben Kalow’s Medieval Space Race.
As described by the designer, “Medieval Space Race is a lighthearted tribute to the awe-inspiring achievements of the 20th century space explorers told in the illustrated narrative style of the late Middle Ages”. We think the translation is right on target and is why we are excited to add this unique series to our catalog. Choose from Apollo 11, Lunar Rendezvous, Voyager I-II, or Laika.
27 YEARS AGO TODAY: THE FIRST CONFIRMED EXOPLANET
Image item
51 Pegasi became the first officially detected exoplanet in 1995 and resulted in a Nobel for the astronomers Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz for the achievement. However, there is another story of detection in 1988 at a pulsar named Ganma Cephei that took 15 years to confirm
51 Pegasi still remains the first exoplanet discovered orbiting a main-sequence star (similar to the Sun) and that discovery took place 27 years ago today. We are now aware of over 5000 exoplanets with many more candidates awaiting confirmation. Consider celebrating this massive scientific milestone with a Planet Finders print, tee [ unisex | ladies ], or sticker
Image item
DETAIL: The tee and stickers both feature the Trappist System behind the illustration. This is a system where a record number of earth-like planets (7) were found. The blue hued region represents that star’s habitable zone and you may notice it contains three such planets. The poster version also features this system and eight others— including our own solar system for comparison.
