Small Losses Add Up to Big Wins

Failure can be one of the scariest things people face.

I've failed after launching two businesses.

I've failed pursuing a fitness goal.

I've fallen short of targets and goals I've set for my career, our team, and my life.

When I was younger, I was terrified of failure. I saw it as a dead-end, and a shot to my self-worth. I felt that if I fell short in trying something new, I was a failure and my value as a person decreased.

I didn't understand that failure simply an event - not a person. I "failed" to comprehend that failing, just means it didn't work out this time.

Over time my relationship with failure shifted. As I shared in this short interview, I now look at life as a giant science experiment.

I'm not afraid to try new things. I'll leave my comfort zone to test if something works. I'm not scared to fail because I've learned two important things:

Unless I'm willing to push myself to the point of failure, I won't ever discover how much more I've got in the tank. Applies to my workouts, my career, and my life.

There are only two outcomes in my mindset:

1. I win (yay!) or

2. I learn what it's going to take to win.

Notice what wasn't there?

*Being a failure.

*Allowing failure to be the end of my story

*Repeating a failure

Because it's not about failing - it's about growing.

Sometimes you're going to fall short of the target, but as Competitors we must learn to look for the lessons in that fall - what can we use and apply in our next attempt to get closer to winning.

We don't look at failing a lift in the gym as a bad thing - we simply see that we need to put in more work to get stronger.

The same applies to your life.

Don't fear failure. Learn from it and stack it up to build your bigger future win.

I'm cheering for you today, go win.

- Jake
