New York City's Delivery Workers Have Had Enough

The one story you should read today, selected by the editors of New York.

Before I read Josh Dzieza’s account of what life is like for New York City delivery workers, I assumed I knew the story already: The apps are relentless, the tips are inconsistent, traffic accidents are common. Turns out, that’s just the beginning. The pressure from DoorDash, Uber Eats, and the other third-party services aiming to deliver food faster and farther has forced workers to invest in expensive e-bikes, which in turn has made them targets for violent thieves, who attack them for their bikes. After months of assaults, and even one death, they have banded together to protect themselves. The consequences of our fast and limitless delivery options couldn’t be more dystopic.
