The Rare Talent of Michael K. Williams

Email sent: Sep 8, 2021 5:02pm
The one story you should read today, selected by the editors of New York.

When an actor known for a signature character dies, it’s all too tempting to let that role dominate the conversation about their life and work. To a certain extent, it’s impossible to talk about the great Michael K. Williams, who was found dead in his Brooklyn apartment on Labor Day, without talking about The Wire’s Omar Little, the breakout role that earned him a lifetime of hearing the phrase “Omar comin’!” whenever he walked down the street. But as Matt Zoller Seitz illuminates in his thoughtful appreciation of Williams’s career, what’s most fascinating about him isn’t just that one iconic character, but the way he used it as a foundation for a series of performances that seemed to be in conversation with one another, with the society that consumed them, and with his own complex, contradictory psychology.

Death of a Storyteller
Rare is the actor who can locate the specific in the universal and vice versa. Michael K. Williams was that actor.
