What It Was Like to Get Scouted for 'The Activist'

The one story you should read today, selected by the editors of New York.

A reality-competition program with an inane premise is practically a requisite for the fall TV calendar, but nothing about The Activist — a proposed CBS series that would see six real-life activists battle each other for visibility, funding, and resources — feels like entertainment. After a wave of backlash, the show’s producers announced it would be retooled into a noncompetitive documentary, but not before Vulture’s Justin Curto spoke to climate activist Clover Hogan about her experience auditioning for the series. Their conversation poses crucial questions about the ever-expanding medium of reality TV while illuminating the increasingly thorny territory between awareness and exploitation.
