Music for Changemakers
Dear Reading with my kids is one of my favorite things in the whole world. Right now, my daughter is really into reading about kids around the world and my son is diving deep into anything about dinosaurs. Books are an amazing way to empower kids to learn about what interests them, spark conversations about difficult topics, and develop empathy by getting to know different characters. Books will probably always be my favorite teaching tool, but lately I've been leaning on something else: music. We sing songs while cooking dinner, listen to music when driving, and generally always have something playing in the background. A while back, I introduced my kids to the Mosaic Project's Songs for Peace and a Better World, an album I used to play in my kindergarten classroom. The album is full of great songs about getting along with each other, something my kids could definitely use help with. When in the midst of a fight, my kids now spontaneously sing "Fighting is not the solution, try conflict resolution." They don't always totally follow through with the conflict resolution part, but it's a start! This week on the blog, I wrote about Music for Changemakers. Check it out for more ideas of how to use music as a teaching tool. I'd love to hear about what music you like to listen to with your kids! Leave a comment on the blog or reply to this email and let me know. Have a great weekend! Lily Unsubscribe | Update your profile | 417 Clayton Avenue, El Cerrito, CA 94530

The Joy and Power of Family Stories
Dear I hope you've had a wonderful week! Over here, we're teetering between holiday madness and holiday wonderland. Between all the school events and festive celebrations, I think it's extra important to carve out space to slow down. Use these ideas for ways to make the most out of the holiday season: Share Family Stories One of the perfect ways to slow down and connect with your kids is by telling stories. I recently published a guest post from my colleague Melanie Vetter of Wellfleet Circle, whose passion is to help people use stories to connect with those that they love. She wrote a great post about how to share family stories, complete with tips and conversation starters (I especially love the idea of starting with "Remember when..." stories). Check it out here! Be Mindful The holidays are also a great time to practice mindfulness. I recently wrote an article for Forbes on how schools are using mindfulness in the classroom. Trying mindfulness with your kids can be super simple! If my kids need a reset, I use these strategies: Close your eyes and mindfully listen closely to everything they hear. Then when they open their eyes we talk about all the things we heard. You can do this several times in a row, trying to listen more carefully each time. Mindfully breathing. I ask my kids to imagine they are smelling soup, bringing air in slowly through their nose. Then I tell them to blow on the soup, blowing the air back out through their mouths. Finding quick ways to practice mindfulness together is a great way to find peace during busy times. Looking for Holiday Presents? Head over to the Curiosity Pack shop!
