Handle with care
Hello and welcome back to Declutter Fast

Thanks to an alert reader, here's MORE on yesterday's tip.

It can be a great idea to give things away. But make sure you do it right!

For example, here's MORE about my "Free - Please Take" laundromat tip!

Many times I have taken an item to a nearby laundromat for the purpose of letting someone else take it off my hands, without just throwing it away.

These laundromats have folding tables that everyone can see.

Those are the perfect place to put your item. BUT...

1. The people have to be able to SEE the item. It can't just be hidden in a box.

2. There must only be a very small amount of items at one time. Not one-third of your garage or shed...

3. The items have to be something people will really want! So know your people!

For example - items children really like and will use.

So choose things you know other people will love (as much as you will love never having to think about it or look at it ever again).

A lot of "stuff" that got passed down to me, including a set of Christmas plates. A big set, for 10 people.

Wow, it just took up more space, but at first I was hesitant to get rid of them.

Not to mention, a set of dishware can get heavy in a box, or can take up a lot of space on the shelf.

On top of that, I thought they looked a bit cheap even though they were pretty enough.

THAT was a perfect laundromat item. I KNEW a lot of people would be thrilled to have a set of Christmas plates.

(In a case like that, you're wise to bring along the boxes and packing material too - but people still have to be able to SEE what they're getting.)

Now here is the most important rule:

More than anything, you don't want to burden the owner or manager of a laundromat by dumping your discards there if there's any chance they won't get snatched up right away.

So it has to be a busy laundromat, used by the kind of people who will go for your stuff, whether that's single folks or families.

If you're really super thoughtful, you can just bring a book or some laundry of your own, and stay with your giveaways and even ask a few people if they want them. They may want to be sure the stuff is actually free!

Creative thoughts for giving stuff away are great - as long as it stays easy - and fast - for you.

Giving things away is one option but not the only one.

It is not a sin to throw something away! So eliminate the misplaced guilt.

You've had the item this long, and it takes up space in your headache again and again.

The point is to lighten your burden, not add to it in any way. It's hard enough just to tackle the excess, so do what works for you.

Soon you'll feel better, freer, and lighter!

And to truly free yourself, not just for a little while, but for good, it takes a mental shift in the way you look at all the tasks you want very much to do.
