When too much is enough
Hello and welcome back to Declutter Fast

In moving back to a smaller place, we can face a BIG problem.

We have WAY too much stuff for the size of the place!

Strangely enough, just at the time we may move to a smaller place, we might also inherit some furniture. This doubles the problem - for a while!

What can you do when you have ONE room with WAY too much stuff?

First, decide what is the focal point of the room.

It may be the sofa, a fireplace, a unique part of the room, or a piano.

In a bedroom, the focal point is usually the bed!

(Thank heaven for easy decisions like that one.)

The focal point is the main feature or function of the room.

It can also be the best part of the room, in the case of a musical instrument.

With the focal point of the room in mind, you can then think of the other pieces of furniture. Which ones are necessary? which ones make the room look better?

If there is too much furniture in a room, some of it will definitely have to go - if you value your sanity!

But it can be hard to figure out which things should go!

If you're trying to decide which pieces stay or go, then experiment by taking most everything out of the room except the focal point.

Then decide where the focal point looks best.

Then add in one important piece of furniture. Keep the lamps or lighting in mind, too.

Try out different arrangements, but only add in a piece at a time.

Then it's easier to see how great a room can look with less furniture.

You'll really feel that you can breathe better in a room that isn't overcrowded.

Where will that excess furniture go? We'll talk about that soon, too.

Decluttering your furniture will make you feel great. You'll enjoy your true favorite pieces that much more.

Every decluttering effort we make adds up.

Here's to the joy of order in our lives!

Dear Mimi,

I am home every day now, having just retired a week ago. Decluttering that "catch all" room is my first project. I thought I'd start with all the papers that I have saved over what seems like a lifetime! I am really having a hard time throwing papers out. They are jokes, stories, household tips, recipes...

I am determined to get them all organized so I can move on. There is hardly any room to walk in this room, and I want to clean it to satisfy myself AND my husband. Keep the decluttering tips coming. They are a blessing to me!
