Hello and welcome back to Declutter Fast

We're talking about the top two types of clutter. Yesterday we talked about paper clutter.

When you get the top two types of clutter handled, the rest will be a snap.

Today we're talking about the second one -

The one that everyone has to handle -

Which is: all the things made out of cloth.

I'm talking about clothes, towels, sheets, pillowcases, dishcloths, curtains, blankets, and more.

The list is long. And let's face it, the more people you have living in your space, the more cloth you have to deal with.

But even if you live alone or only with your long-suffering mate, the sheer volume of fabric can just be an avalanche.

So here's exactly how to handle this avalanche.

The first thing is to put the fabric things (clothes, sheets, towels, curtains, everything) in a corner by themselves...

... because they've been bad!

You have to deal with them.

Fabric items are in a class by themselves.

For example - do you have too many sheets and pillowcases?

These things can just sprout up over the years.

And there are just too many. You could spend a whole day sorting them out.

You don't really need extras. You just need enough for the beds and maybe a spare - maybe.

I'm not so sure about that spare.

Is the spare really necessary? Or does it just sit in the linen closet year after year... doing nothing?

And then you have to wash it - even though it hasn't been used - because it's not fresh after sitting that long!

Sheets and pillowcases and towels take up lots of space.

So do the curtains you haven't used in over 20 years... that you love - but they don't fit your current place.

Here's the good news - it's easy to find a new home for these wayward pillowcases and what-not.

Just take the extras to a donation box, and someone else can love those sheets like they haven't been loved in years!

I talk about dealing with clothes in my Declutter Fast program.

Every effort we make adds up and you definitely need to deal with all those things made of cloth!

Imagine the simplicity of looking in the closet and only seeing a few items.

The sheets and towels and curtains you're actually using... will be in use!

P.S. From readers:

Dear Mimi, it is so inspiring to read your emails, and especially today’s email about scrubbing the floor on your hands and knees! I agree that it gets much cleaner this way, plus the equipment needs are minimal, just a good cleaner, a small rag, and a nearby sink to rinse the rag every so often.

When you see the results almost immediately, your spirit starts to soar and be filled with gratitude!

Clean makes me serene! (and happy, joyful, and energized)

Arlene

What a great idea to get them to take their own trash with them. I wanted to say about taking a bit of rubbish one at a time or more than one item at a time, I am sure this will work better for me.

Hey, how about a "no eating drinking or smoking allowed in the car" rule. My 2001 car still looks new because I don't allow smoking or eating or drinking in my car. If people don't like the rule they can get a ride from someone else.

Dear Mimi,

You are so Inspirational. You have made me get rid of not only items lying around the house creating chaos, but also negative thoughts. Now I see a clean beautiful home and think positive thoughts.
