Hello and welcome back to your Declutter Fast Newsletter

Cleaning is actually fun. At least sometimes!

Cleaning is one of the fastest ways to feel a sense of accomplishment.

You know this whenever you clean those faucet knobs. Instant shine.

Here's a wonderful old-fashioned way of cleaning that I dearly love.

I'm doing this in my home right now. What is it?

Cleaning the floor in the real way.

Forget cruddy old mops. Forget the Swiffer. For now.

I'm talking about getting on your hands and knees and actually scrubbing the floor - the old-fashioned way.

I can just hear the big objections. "Mimi, my back. My knees!"

Okay, I realize that not everyone can get on their knees and scrub the floor. But two things:

1. Getting up from the floor is one of the best exercises there is. It's also not necessarily that easy - if you're over 12 or not a ballerina. Some should not even "go there" if there is any chance of falling or pulling a muscle. So I'm not recommending this for everyone. Just enjoy reading about it instead!

2. I highly recommend knee padding of some kind. I use an old towel folded a few times. Works great.

Now that we have the safety considerations out of the way... (don't try this at home!)

That reminds me - another objection - I have heard this type of scathing comment before:

"Mimi, it's FILTHY down there on the floor. Are you kidding?"

Yes, that is the point. :) We're going to make it NOT filthy.Β

Scrubbing the floor ranks up there with painting the Sistine Chapel. (Thankfully you do not have to reach UP like Michelangelo did.)

I love scrubbing the floor. The floor gets clean - much cleaner than with a sorry old stinky mop.

And because it's much cleaner, it stays cleaner longer. It looks better.

There's a whole lot of dirt down there. People feet; pet feet; who knows what else crawls over the tile when you're not looking...

In the old days, people scrubbed floors because they wanted floors to be truly clean.

I've been scrubbing my kitchen floor. It has blue tile squares.

What I'm using is Soft Scrub. I happen to love Soft Scrub and it's my favorite cleanser.

It does a great job of removing all dirt.

I also clean the wood floors this way.

I love the way wood floors feel under my feet. Doesn't everybody?

Naturally, you don't clean wood floors with the same cleansing agent as a tile floor. You do nothing that could scratch the wood!

But I know one thing. There is NO substitute for cleaning a floor by hand if you really want it clean.

When you clean a floor by hand, you'll know what I mean.

When you scrub the floor, you can FEEL whether it's clean.

Your fingers go over the surface, and if there is any bump, you feel it. Then you can clean it again and make sure that spot is out.

What else? Use a paint scraper. A paint scraper helps you get up anything that your first scrubbing doesn't remove.

The first scrubbing softens up the spot so that it's easy and fast for the paint scraper to remove it on the next go-round.

Scrubbing the floor is indeed a religious experience.

After all, you're kneeling. And wow, the cleanliness is off the charts.

Try it and see.

We all need a serene, beautiful, orderly place to call home.

And your family deserves this too.
