The primary purpose of suspension is to keep the tyres in contact with the road as much as possible, whilst absorbing the bumps in the road, providing handling performance and comfort to the driver and passengers in the vehicle. The suspension system is made up of multiple components, but here we're covering springs and shock absorbers.
What Does The Spring Do?
A spring compresses when you hit a bump in the road, it absorbs the forces and reduces the impact felt by you in the car. When it compresses and absorbs those forces, it then needs to release the pressure.
What Does The Shock Absorber Do?
If a spring is allowed to release the pressure after being compressed without control, it jumps around in an unpredictable manner, this is where a shock absorber (or damper) comes into play. The shock controls the spring's rebound movement to keep the tyre in contact with the road.
So, Why Upgrade?
Most vehicle manufacturers compromise between comfort and handling performance on road cars. Because they compromise, when it comes to spirited driving or track days, OE suspension can be lacking. Upgrading to lowering springs and matching with uprated sport shocks means a lower centre of gravity and stiffer ride. This keeps the tyres on the road as much as possible, making it sharper and more stable in corners.
