WEEK IN REVIEW

this week, creatives emphasized a yearn for nature, with art and design projects that employed flora in their conception and making. designboom reader nicolas abdelkader presents a series of photo montages that turn planes, ships and trucks into huge green planters. 'the urgency to slow down' imagines an alternative future after lockdown, one in which these symbols of excessive energy consumption have been left behind, only to become something beneficial for the environment. meanwhile, designer kyunchul kim created a stool using wood that has been used in traditional korean hanoks, combining it with mycelium – the vegetative part of a fungus. the purpose of the project is to allow the materials, which once played an important structural and functional role, to meet other materials and generate new forms. in barcelona, the el liceu opera house reopened with a concert to an audience of 2,292 potted plants. created by spanish conceptual artist eugenio ampudia, the 'concert for the biocene' saw the string quartet perform 'crisantemi' by puccini as a response to his time in quarantine time, which allowed him to build a greater connection with nature.

in architecture news this week, MAD architects revealed its masterplan and architectural design for the ‘shenzhen bay culture park’. the ambitious complex covers an approximate area of 51,000 square meters, with a total building area of 182,000 square meters. the project includes the ‘creative design hall’ and the ‘shenzhen science and technology museum’, as well as expansive public green space along shenzhen’s waterfront. the development is expected to complete in 2023.

finally, offering a calming sense of escape from the still overwhelming newsfeeds is new york-based artist and graphic designer, sho shibuya, and his beautiful painted sunrises. what began as a way to document the days spent at home during lockdown has grown into a captivating series, which shibuya has aptly called 'sunrises from a small window.' from graduating shades of blue to bursts of vivid pink and warm orange, the tones and colors of the paintings provide a soothing contrast to the headlines of the day which they cover.
