The market comings and goings for this week
Pete's Produce

What's happening at the markets this week.
And the rain came down...
Fortunately it has fallen over many of the places that have been so desperate for it and not just in Sydney. Good falls have been recorded all over the state, not drought breaking but at least it is a start. Now we just need regular, steady falls to soak into the ever so hard ground.
Fabulous Figs
Figs are believed to have originated in the Middle East and are now grown in many parts of the world including
Australia. The season in Australia is a relatively short one – late summer to mid-Autumn – so enjoy them fresh while you can! As well as being delicious they are an excellent source of dietary fibre and a good source of vitamins A, E and K.

Marinated Fig and Mozzarella Salad
Ingredients:
8 ripe figs, stalks trimmed
4tbs balsamic vinegar
2 tbs extra virgin olive oil, plus extra for drizzling
finely grated ssest and juice of 1 lemon
1 tbs chopped fresh thyme
handful of fresh mint leaves
2 x 150g packets mozzarella
50g bag wild rocket

Cut each fig lengthways into four wedges. Make a marinade by whisking the vinegar, oil and lemon juice with salt and pepper to taste.
Stand the fig wedges up in the middle of a large shallow serving dish, keeping them close together. Scatter the lemon zest and thyme on top, then drizzle with the marinade. Leave to stand at room temperature for 30 minutes.
Roughly chop the mint. Drain and slice the mozzarella, toss with half the mint and season with salt and pepper to taste.
To serve, arrange the mozzarella and mint mixture round the figs, scatter with lightly torn rocket leaves and the remaining mint, and drizzle with a little olive oil.

Excellent Eggplants
Back in season are delicious and versatile eggplants. They are so wonderful at soaking up flavours and are perfect for curries, stews and BBQs!
Fun fact - although we talk of eggplants a vegetables it is by botanical definition a berry!

Curious about Celery?
Celery is a really tricky crop to grow! It hates the heat and hot winds and is a super thirsty crop but then give it too much water and it becomes a soggy mess and rots. Combine this with the horrendous weather we have been having and you end up with mixed quality celery. The best advice is to cheer when the celery is fantastic and to expect it to be a really changeable crop at other times!
As always we are working with farmers and suppliers to ensure we have the best crops we can get.

Leafy Greens
As I have discussed in weeks gone by, the horrendous heat, fires and storms over the Christmas season has really impacted availability of all leafy green crops including lettuce, herbs, Asian greens, kale and spinach. Generally they take 6 - 8 weeks to come to harvest as so we are hoping that supplies will be back to normal in the coming weeks!
Bye bye Mangoes
Supplies of good quality mangoes are disappearing quickly as their season draws to a close. Grab those last few sweet, delicious mangoes as they won't be back until November!
