Abacus to Measuring Cups

Today is Maths Day (the alternative to its sister holiday celebrated in March). This day is meant to encourage students around the world to sharpen their mathematic skills - and what better way than to apply arithmetic and problem solving skills in the kitchen!

Real-world applications of math while cooking include measuring ingredients, setting and calculating time to complete recipes & steps, and even calculating food budgets!

Here are some of our favorite ways to apply math in the kitchen:

Measuring spoons!

All of our explorer boxes come with kitchen tools. In the explore Greece box, measuring spoons are included.

These real tools have a playful design and encourage fine motor skills but also problem solving when faced with half spoon measurements and doubling recipes.

Kitchen Timer!

When delivering a delicious meal on time, knowing how long it takes to make a recipe is helpful. All of our recipe cards include how many minutes it could take from start to finish.

Timers help when counting down time while cooking or even calculating when dinner will be served! These colorful timers are included in the explore India box or can be purchased separately.

Budgeting!

There are many tools out there to track spending dollars - get the kids involved early. When planning your upcoming explorer dinner, have the kids figure out what ingredients they will need from the next grocery trp. Budgeting is a skill they will use beyond the kitchen too!
