FIT TRICKS BY FITTRACK: THE IMPORTANCE OF A DYNAMIC WARM-UP BEFORE JOGGING
By: Evan Lee, MEd, CSCS, PES

The nice weather is finally here, along with runners of all experience levels.

Seeing my community develop and grow each spring as new and old runners get outside for some cardio and fresh air is a beautiful sight. However, it's all too common for those runners to suffer injuries from running without taking the proper steps to warm up their bodies.

Here are a few ways dynamic warm-ups can decrease your chance of injury:

They prepare your body for physical activity.
Contracting and lengthening your muscles mimics the movements performed during jogging. This makes your muscle quicker to fire and supports your joints during movement.

They increase your body's internal temperature.
The increased temperature comes from increased blood flow, which helps provide oxygen to the working muscles and improves the elasticity of your connective tissues.

They prepare your joints for movement.
The movements give your joints time to lubricate with synovial fluid, which improves their ability to perform the range of motion required for jogging.

Remember, you don’t need to set a record every time you go out for a jog. In fact, you don’t even need to jog. The best medicine for the body truly is movement and connection. Find someone to get outside with! Whether for a jog or a walk, enjoy the warm weather, the company, and reap the benefits of a healthy, active, and happy body!

PS: I put together an easy dynamic warm-up routine you can check out here.
