This email will introduce you to all of the public holidays in Japan and what they mean. NEW YEAR'S DAY Unsurprisingly celebrated on the 1st of the New Year, this day is typically reserved for family get-togethers and shopping sprees. COMING OF AGE DAY (2ND MONDAY OF JAN) A special ceremony for all kids who congratulate everyone who reached the age of maturity (20 years old) during the past year. Twenty is a significant year for Japanese as this is the age when people are officially old enough to drink, smoke, and vote. FOUNDATION DAY (FEB 11) This date commemorates Japan’s first emperor, Jimmu, ascending to the throne in 660 BCE. VERNAL EQUINOX (AROUND MAR 20) The date for the Vernal Equinox depends on when the vernal equinox actually happens and is meant to be a day to reflect on your admiration of living things. SHOWA DAY (APR 29) This holiday celebrates the birth of former emperor Hirohito (known as Emperor Showa, with Showa referring to the era corresponding with his reign). CONSTITUTION DAY (MAY 3) May 3rd is the date in which Japan’s post war constitution took effect. GREENERY DAY (MAY 4) Greendery Day was originally created to replace Showa day following the death of Hirohito in 1989, but was then moved to May 4th to help in the creation of “Golden Week”. Golden Week is typically a week long vacation for most people in Japan, starting from Showa Day and ending with... CHILDREN’S DAY (MAY 5) Marking the end of Golden Week, Children's Day is often accompanied by “Koinobori” or windsocks that resemble Koi fish. MARINE DAY (3RD MONDAY OF JUL) A day to express gratitude for the blessings from the sea – very important to an island nation. MOUNTAIN DAY (AUG 11) This holiday will officially start in 2016 and was created to express appreciation for Japan’s mountains, covering most of the island nation. RESPECT FOR THE AGED (3RD MONDAY SEP) A day set aside to show respect for the elderly. AUTUMNAL EQUINOX (AROUND SEP 23) Similar to the Vernal Equinox, this date celebrates the coming of Autumn and is part of a string of holidays, referred to as "Silver Week", which starts with Respect for the Aged Day and ends with a general Public Holiday in order to give most of the working force in Japan an extra day of leisure. HEALTH & SPORTS DAY (2ND MONDAY OF OCT) A day to celebrate a healthy mind and body. Originally held on October 10th (the opening day of the Tokyo Olympics), it was moved to the second Monday in October along with the introduction of the "Happy Monday System", designed to move the majority of Japanese public holidays to Monday in order to provide a long weekend for the majority of employees with a five day work week. CULTURE DAY (NOV 3) A day to celebrate peace and freedom, as well as to promote culture. LABOR DAY (NOV 23) A day to praise labor and production (sounds very Japanese, doesn’t it). EMPEROR’S BIRTHDAY (DEC 23) The current emperor, Akihito, was born on this day in 1933. Although not recognized as an official public holiday on the calendar, many Japanese take time off for obon, which is usually celebrated in mid August. Originally a Buddhist based period of honoring one's ancestors, nowadays, most Japanese use this time to return to their home towns, visit their family, and clean the graves of their relatives. Sharing Japanese snacks with the world, one box at a time View this email in your browser English is a hodgepodge of lone words and adaptations from many different languages and as such, it can sometimes be a bit difficult to know where many English phrases originate from. Today we are going to look at some words that came directly from Japanese! Otaku Up until recently, this word has held negative implications in Japanese, with the stereotypical view of an otaku being someone who is unhealthily obsessed with something. With that said, otaku does not hold quite as much stigma as it used to, with more people in Japan positively identifying as such - especially in urban areas. Outside of Japan, the word is usually equivalent to "geek" or "nerd". Futon Unlike Westernized futons, which are couch / bed hybrids, Japanese futons are sleeping mats that can be easily rolled up and stored in the closet during the day. Futons are especially useful for small homes and apartments, where a lack of sleeping space is a real issue. Shiatsu Literally means “Finger Pressure”, Shiatsu is a type of pressure point massage originating from traditional Chinese medicine. Sudoku Literally translated to mean “Single Digit”, this popular number puzzle game quickly rose to popularity in the Western world around 2004. Amusingly enough, while Westerners refer to the game using the Japanese word, Japanese refer to the game using an English name: Nan-Pure (shortened from Number Place). Skosh Meaning "a little bit", skosh originates from the Japanese word "sukoshi", which means the same thing. Example: Just a skosh for me, thank you. Koi Fish Koi might sound special in English, but in Japanese, it simply means "common carp", with "nishikigoi" referring specifically to the colorful patterned carp that most Westerners are familiar with. Koi can also mean "love" in Japanese, and so Koi can be used in Japan to symbolize love or friendship. Kaizen Meaning “Change for the better”, this also happens to be Hitachi’s English motto in Japan. Kaizen is a popular Japanese business philosophy regarding constant improvement. Honcho Although not as common these days, this word was used to mean leader or chief, such as "the head honcho". Emoji Literally translating to "picture character", emojis are ideograms or smileys commonly used in social media and emails to represent emotion through text. Karate Karate is translated to "Empty Hand", which is why karate style fighting does not involve weaponry. Incidentally, the "kara" from "karate" can also be found in "karaoke" which means "empty orchestra". Tycoon Meaning great prince, or more recently, wealthy business mogul, Tycoon originates from the Japanese word "taikun" and entered the English language in 1857 partly thanks to Commodore Perry. Who was the first man to be referred to as "Tycoon" you might ask. None other than Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States! Bento A single portion lunch meal, or lunchbox that are popular on trains – the only socially acceptable way to eat on public transportation – as well as in schools and offices (for those of us looking to save some money). Ginkgo Ginkgos are large trees, originating from China, which bear yellow fruit most famous for their health benefits. Ginkgo biloba is the only living species of of the Ginkgophyta division, and is also referred to as a "living fossil". Umami Umami is part of the five basic tastes and is used to describe food that is savory. Translated directly, "umami" can mean "delicious taste". Established in 1916, Meji is the largest confectionery manufacturer in Japan. Although most commonly known for its chocolate bars, Meji also has a selection of DIY kits which, while not as extensive as Kracie, are still quite a lot of fun, nonetheless. ______________________________________________________________________ Lotte was created by Shin Kyuk-Ho in 1948. After amassing money in Japan, he returned to Korea to build his company, and has since created an empire that encompasses retail, financial services, and even petrol-chemicals! Lotte consist of over 60 business units, but you are probably more familiar with their mints, gums, Ghana and Crunky chocolate, as well as the ever-popular Koala March. ______________________________________________________________________ How do you pronounce "Kracie" anyway, you might be asking. In Japanese it is written “暮らしヘ” (ku-ra-she-EH) and very roughly means "the space you live in". With that in mind, it's no surprise that Kracie produces mostly toiletries, pharmaceutical goods, and food products. Relatively new to the confectionery scene, their DIY candy kits became an international hit with candy lovers everywhere! ______________________________________________________________________ Calbee was established in 1949 by Matsuo Takashi and quickly became famous for wheat and potato based snack products. Calbee produces many breakfast cereals and potato chips for the domestic market, and you most likely know them by their most popular items like Kappa Ebisen (shrimp-flavored crisps) as well as Jagarico and Jagabee (Jagaimo means potato in Japanese). ______________________________________________________________________ Established in 1922, it is most famous for its Osaka running man image. It is also interesting to note that the running man trademark was adopted to represent an average man crossing the finish line of a 300 meter race, incidentally the exact distance it takes to burn 15.4 kcal, which is how many calories one of their original caramels contained. ______________________________________________________________________ Morinaga was established in 1899 by Taichiro Morinaga. Mr. Morinaga grew up as a poor potter’s apprentice and moved to the US in his early twenties. He was so enamored with the taffy and marshmallow candies he ate in America that he decided to bring that same affordable sweetness back to Japan. While they sell many biscuit and chocolate products, they are probably most famous for their Choco-Ball products, along with their world-famous Hi-Chews, originally created out of necessity since they are more resistant to the heat and humidity of Japanese summers. Anyone who has spent some time in Japan can tell you about the ubiquity of Japanese “Jidouhanbaiki”, and they sell everything from ice cream to whisky! 2. Japan is composed of over 6,000 islands. Only a tenth of them are inhabited, but this greatly increases the area of Japanese national water. 3. Tokyo restaurants have been awarded twice as many Michelin culinary stars as restaurants in Paris. It goes without saying that you can find some very top shelf sushi restaurants in Tokyo, but you can also find pretty much anything else your discerning palate desires within walking distance from most train stations in the downtown Tokyo. Unfortunately, fine dining options dramatically drop off for those of us living out in the countryside. 4. Fortune cookies were first sold in Japan in the 1800s. They were then adopted by American Chinese restaurants at the turn of the century. 5. Over half of the world’s industrial robots are operated in Japan. As the population in Japan gradually gets older, more and more of the workforce is replaced with robotic helpers. Recently, customer service and nursing have also turned to robots to help with heavy lifting and more mundane job aspects. 6. Japan is home to the oldest family-run business in the world, Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan, which has been operational since the year 705. They've been doing business for more than 1300 years! (Speaking of old family businesses, one of the candy distributors we work with is represented by the 6th, 7th and 8th generation of candy specialists. These people know their stuff!) 7. Slurping your noodles and gulping your beer are perfectly acceptable table manners. In fact, it is common to see people in Japanese commercials doing just that. In some swanky restaurants in Tokyo, you can spend over a hundred dollars on one plate of the best cuts of sushi. 9. Japanese snowmen are made from two balls of snow. This in turn means they are easier to make, of course. 10. Christmas is considered a romantic holiday in Japan. Many performing artists hold concerts for couples on Christmas night. Q: When will I get my first box and how long does it take for my box to ship? ... I paid for my subscription last month, but my box still hasn't arrived. Should I be worried? A: We collect the first payment for our subscriptions the day the account is created. The second payment (and all future subscription payments) is collected on the 15th of each month. Subscriptions created from the 15th of the month to the end of the month will have their first box shipped within 48 hours. Subscriptions created from the 1st to the 14th of the month will have their first box shipped around the 17th. International shipping takes between 10 and 20 business days (2 to 4 weeks), depending on the location and workload of your local post office. Having said this, please note that some boxes can take a bit longer. If your package has not arrived a month after it was sent, please contact your local post office and ask if they were unable to deliver your package on the first attempt. Q: Do you ship full size snacks? What kinds of candy do you include in your subscription boxes? A: We try to include a wide range of snacks in all of our boxes: sweet, savory, fun, mainstream, character based, full size, sample size, and DIY candies. We are constantly listening to our club members about what they want to see more of. Our social media is also a good place to leave requests and suggestions. Q: Do you have a vegetarian / vegan / gluten free box? Can I have a box that doesn’t include nuts / dairy products? A: Our club members’ safety and snack enjoyment is our number one priority. At present we do not have a box that excludes nuts and dairy products etc. but do our best to label the products that contain those ingredients. Having said this, cross contamination in the factory is always a possibility, so when in doubt, please share your treats with someone else. We currently do not have any specialty subscriptions (vegetarian, vegan, gluten free etc.) Japanese snack companies tend to focus more on quality or quirkiness, and do not have the same breadth of specialty diet products that American and European countries enjoy. Specialty boxes are certainly something we are interested in providing in the future. Q: Can I try out the subscription box before I subscribe? A: Yes! Please go to our products page and check out our single boxes section on our products page to purchase just one box. Q: What hoops do I have to jump through to cancel my monthly subscription?
