My new TED talk starts with a bucket

In 2015, I gave a TED Talk about preventing the next epidemic. Last week, I returned to the TED stage for the first time since then—and spoke about the same thing.

A lot has changed since 2015, of course. Back then, I didn’t even use the word “pandemic” because I didn’t think enough people knew what it meant. Today, more than two years into COVID-19, no one needs to be persuaded that preventing pandemics should be a top priority for the world.

So at this year’s TED, I drew from my new book, How to Prevent the Next Pandemic, and talked about the steps we need to take.

I focused especially on why the world needs a full-time team of people whose job is to prepare for outbreaks and prevent them from becoming pandemics. This team would resemble a global firefighting squad, which is why I began my talk with a wooden bucket.
