Summer Books 2021
By Bill Gates | June 14, 2021
When I learn about something exciting, I can’t wait to tell people about it. That’s one of the reasons why I started my blog and why I keep writing new posts over a decade later. I recently wrote about an inspiring meeting I had with education leaders and an amazing physician in Sierra Leone that I think you should know about. And now I’m continuing an annual tradition: sharing some books you might want to read this summer.
Books are one of the best ways to learn about the world. When I’m curious about or interested in a subject, I love to learn more about it through a book. Sometimes I do this intentionally. Other times it happens subconsciously, and I only notice a pattern when I look back at my recent reading.
Over the last couple months, I’ve read an unusual number of books about the struggle between humanity and nature. Four of the five titles on my summer recommendations list address the idea. There’s a look at how researchers are trying to undo damage done to the planet by humans, a deep dive about how your body keeps you safe from microscopic invaders, a president’s memoir that addresses the fallout from an oil spill, and a novel about a group of ordinary people fighting to save the trees.
If none of those catch your interest, I’ve also included a great book about the undoing of a mythic company. All five of these books gave me something to think about, and I hope some of them do the same for you this summer.

Thank you for being an Insider!
