Reasons for hope on World Alzheimer’s Day
By Bill Gates | September 20, 2021
September 21st is World Alzheimer’s Day. For families like mine who have watched a loved one suffer from this terrible disease, this day can bring mixed emotions. On one hand, it’s a reminder that Alzheimer’s continues to devastate millions of families. One out of every nine people aged 65 or older has the disease, and even more are forced to watch as someone they love slowly disappears.
On the other hand, World Alzheimer’s Day is an inspiring reminder that hope is on the horizon. Brilliant scientists all over the world are working hard to stop Alzheimer’s disease—and they’re making terrific progress.
In my latest blog post, I write about several promising breakthroughs that may soon help us better diagnose Alzheimer’s. Right now, there’s no cheap or easily accessible way to determine if someone has the disease. But I’m hopeful that doctors will soon have several new tools at their disposal, from a simple blood test to a smartphone app that uses augmented reality to spot signs of mental decline.
Read about why I’m more optimistic about stopping Alzheimer’s than ever on my blog.
I hope you and your loved ones are doing well.
