Washington State Teacher of the Year Brooke Brown

This is not an easy time to be an educator. Being a teacher is a demanding job even in the best circumstances, and the pandemic has created new challenges that have made working in a classroom more difficult than ever.

I recently met with Brooke Brown, the 2021 Washington State Teacher of the Year, to learn all about how her classroom has adapted over the last year and a half. She teaches ethnic studies and English to high school seniors, and many of her students are essential workers who help provide for their families on top of their schoolwork. Brooke told me that her focus has been on helping them get through this difficult time and giving them the flexibility they need to keep up with school. You can read more about Brooke on my blog.

I am so impressed by Brooke’s ability to adapt to the realities of the pandemic. She deserves the recognition she’s received, although I know she’s far from the only teacher who has had to make an extraordinary effort to make her classroom work in our changing reality.

Teachers already deserved more support than many were getting, and that’s even more evident after the last year and a half. I’m partnering with DonorsChoose to make sure that more teachers have access to the materials they need to get ready for the new school year.
