British Designers Now

Right now we’re seeing a burst of incredible creativity in British fashion. I was surprised to find that many of the looks I wore recently for the Iron Man 3 press tour and other events were pretty much all by British designers. With that in mind, I asked my stylist, Elizabeth Saltzman for a bit of wardrobe inspiration from some of her favorite British designers and labels of the moment. Below, find our picks to get you through the spring and summer in head to toe Brit, or just be inspired by what's coming out of old blighty. We know we are.

The Edit

We spent an afternoon with Elizabeth Saltzman putting together outfits from some of our favorite British designers. See what we came up with below:

Look 1: Pick ‘n’ Mix

Pick a print and mix it up the way we do below.

From Elizabeth:

"When it comes to Erdem you can always think the most beautiful hand embroidery and luxe fabrics done in a cool, edgy way. That’s why, when Gwyneth was traveling to Paris, the city of high fashion, we thought we would try something from Erdem’s upcoming Fall/Winter collection, like this broderie anglaise, neon yellow and burgundy, lurex, Audrey Hepburn-esque look. This look is fashion forward, but what makes it fun is the idea of using lace in an unconventional way. Gwyneth’s look rocked some fierce Jimmy Choo shoes… I can see us rocking a Charlotte Olympia or Nicholas Kirkwood shoe in the mix as well."

You can re-create this look from British designer Erdem in a blue and black print for a special night out.

Here are some ideas for incorporating prints into the everyday.

Trying on a Peter Pilotto outfit straight off the runway for a London screening of Iron Man 3..

From Elizabeth:

"Peter Pilotto is definitely a major force in the “prints” movement and the mix that I saw in this outfit made it chic and uber wearable. Funnily enough we picked this out right after his Spring/Summer 2013 show and I kept looking for the right occasion for Gwyneth to wear it. So happy that it worked! One of the things I love even more is the fact you can mix and match, as it is separates."

Get the same exact outfit or try a different print with similar effect from other British brands like Preen and Stella McCartney. Finish off the look by mixing in black basics like a tote bag and a leather jacket.

Look 2: Peekaboo

Inspired by the sheer swaths of material in Antonio Berardi’s now iconic gown, we put together a few wearable looks with plenty of mesh, lucite, cut-outs, sheer panelling, and see-through details.

From Elizabeth:

"What can I say about Antonio Berardi other than wow, wow, wow?! His endless talent, making some of the most beautiful dresses, jackets and trousers, is exceptional. Antonio’s masterful skill of mixing and matching fabrics is superb. This season is all about having a sneak peek at body parts, whether it be a midriff, shoulder, cleavage or thigh… Antonio Berardi, Christopher Kane, Burberry, Tom Ford, Stella McCartney and many others all did it so beautifully."

For the beach or poolside, wear the jacket and shoes with a bathing suit instead.

We’re loving the new British design duo, Trager Delaney, and are coveting their mesh-back dress for an outfit with a bit of edge to it.

Look 3: Colo(u)rware

Keep it simple by combining a few contrasting but complimentary colors in a minimal way. Mix and match our picks from the color gradient below.

From Elizabeth:

"Color is everywhere this season. We chose this seriously flattering Victoria Beckham dress (all of her dresses are flattering!) for its color, ease and comfort. Emilia Wickstead did some of the best dresses this season… The pink one below being one of my all time favs!"

Combine pastels (like this ladylike Emilia Wickstead dress) with richer, darker tones.

Look 4: Modern Classics

Quite a few of our favorite Brits are pairing white with navy or black for bold, simple and elegant outfits to keep in the wardrobe always.

Wearing British brand Osman for the Iron Man 3 press tour.

From Elizabeth:

"Timeless clothes are always worth the investment. There is nothing wrong with buying something, within your budget, that you will wear for years and years. This Osman jumpsuit works now and will work for many years to come. Accessories - bags, shoes, sunglasses - are a great way to shake up any modern classic. I am especially grooving on the Tabitha Simmons boots below and the Mulberry Willow bag at the moment."

Great, versatile wardrobe staples that won't go out of style.
