Is this your brand on Milled? You can claim it.

How do you know what makes a material eco-friendly? There are a lot of questions one could ask. Is the material ethically sourced? Sustainable? Vegan? Does it use less chemicals and water than traditionally manufactured materials? Does it create less waste? While no one product can check all of the boxes, you can have piece of mind knowing that all of the clothing and accessories from Green Orchyd check at least one box. We have pieces made with Fair Trade Cotton, Organic Cotton, Recycled Polyester, Cork, and Bamboo. Each material has their own unique qualities that you will value and love to wear.

Organic Cotton

Cotton is the most widely used clothing fiber in the world and for good reason: it’s soft, easy to clean, and durable. Unfortunately, it has an extremely high environmental impact. This is mostly due to the large quantities of pesticides, fertilizers, and water required to grow cotton. That t-shirt you are wearing? It uses up 7,001 gallons of water. On the other hand, Organic Cotton uses no chemicals, fertilizers, or pesticides. It also requires less irrigation which results in the need for substantially less water. Another positive? Fabric made with Organic Cotton is super soft! Some of the brands we carry who use Organic Cotton are Synergy Organic, Lily Lotus, and Indigenous Designs.

Recycled Polyester

The average time it takes for one plastic bottle to biodegrade is 450 years. Fortunately, some companies are keeping bottles out of landfills by recycling the plastic and turning it into polyester fabric. It is estimated that it takes about 70 million barrels of oil to produce the virgin polyester fiber that is used in fabrics each year. Recycled Polyester uses far less energy to produce, it frees up space in landfills, and it reduces our dependency on petroleum. Clothes made with Recycled Polyester last a long time and they don’t need to be ironed!

Cork

Fabric made with cork is not only velvety soft, lightweight, and durable, it is natural, recyclable, and biodegradable. Often called a natural leather, cork is actually plant tissue sustainably harvested from the cork oak tree. It is a renewable resource, as cork trees can be harvested every 9 to 12 years for an average of 150 years. Traditional cork harvesting has a low carbon footprint as expert craftsmen, the descortiçadores, skillfully remove the outer layer of bark with axes, taking care not to injure the trees. Cork’s popularity in fashion increases considerably as eco-minded people explore ways to produce necessities and accessories more sustainably.
