Dog anxiety week. Preventing dog anxiety in the salon needs a combination of patience, understanding, positivity and handling techniques.
Here are some helpful tips that you can use to safely groom anxious or aggressive dogs. Meet the dog first with the owner, take note of any signs of anxiety or aggression such as trembling, growling or barking. Build Trust. Start by getting to know the dog. Approach them slowly and calmly, offering treats and gently stroking. Set a calm and relaxed tone. Groom in an area with minimal noise, no other dogs, or distractions. Gradually introduce the dog to grooming tools and handling techniques to naturally familiarise them to the grooming process. If the dog becomes aggressive, calmly redirect their attention with a distraction, such as a toy. Avoid escalating the situation by remaining calm and assertive. Your safety is important! When dealing with an uncertain or potentially aggressive dog, don't hesitate to use a muzzle. It's a precautionary measure that protects both you and the dog. Understand your limits. If a dog is proving too difficult for you to handle, stop. Maybe speak to the owner and recommend a groomer that specialises in handling aggressive dogs.
With these simple 7 tips, you can help reduce any anxiety or aggression during grooming sessions and create a positive experience for your furry client.
