So nervous he “tossed” his cookies…

Randy was on his way to meet his girlfriend’s parents for the first time. He had been dating Jen for about 3 months and the time had come.

“Meeting the parents” can be a little intimidating and nerve-wracking for anyone. But for Randy, it was an absolute nightmare.

For as long as he could remember, Randy struggled with crippling social anxiety.

And this hour and a half trek to Jen’s house was proving to be too much. As he was cruising along the Turnpike in his Grand Prix, the physical symptoms already started.

His ears were on fire and his face was flushed.

A thick film of sweat was creeping down his forehead (even though the AC was on full blast).

His heart was racing and the lump in his throat tightened with every mile traveled. He wasn’t even at Jen’s yet, and he was on the verge of a panic attack.

He contemplated pulling over for a few minutes to try and compose himself.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t an option. Randy had a nasty habit of running late, and he was determined not to make a bad first impression on Jen’s parents.

Even though it had only been a few months, Randy was infatuated with Jen. She understood and accepted him for who he was, social awkwardness and all.

In fact, Jen was one of the few people Randy actually felt comfortable around. It probably helped they were friends for about a year before they started dating.

This meeting was important to him.

There was no way he was going to mess it up.

He managed to fight through the discomfort and made it to Jen’s house (on time for once).

Jen greeted him at the front door, and escorted him through the living room, into the kitchen where her parents sat at the table.

His heart was pounding out of his chest by now, and it felt like someone had their hands wrapped around his throat, right over his Adam’s apple.

He made it through the introductions and things were actually going well.

Then Debbie (Jen’s mom) pulled some freshly baked chocolate chip cookies out of the oven.

Randy’s heart almost stopped.

Jen’s mom was kind enough to bake cookies…sweet gesture right?

Not for Randy.

When he was nervous, he couldn’t eat. It was that damn gag-inducing lump in his throat that just would not go away.

But refusing a cookie was NOT an option. How rude would that have looked?

Randy managed to choke down not one, but TWO cookies.

And that’s when everything went south…

Randy rushed into the bathroom (less than 10 feet from the kitchen) and UP came those delicious chocolate chip cookies…

All while Jen and her parents sat just several steps from the door, listening to every stomach-churning gurgle and violent expulsion.

He told me he briefly considered drowning himself in the toilet, rather than exit the bathroom to face the unbearable scene that waited for him…

I’m sure he was just kidding about that part!

Actually, her parents were totally cool about it and couldn’t have been nicer. And despite his “meet the parents” fiasco, Randy and Jen went on to happily date for 2 and half years.
