Dear Friend,

I flew from Idaho to California last week, so I could drive back with my wife Kristina. We packed up our car and headed towards our place outside of New Meadows, Idaho. Our trip usually takes 17 or 18 hours, so we left at 5:30 a.m. We figured we would make it up to our place around midnight … after losing an hour to the time change and stopping along the way to get gas, let our dogs run around, and stretch our legs.

At about midnight when we were a few miles south of New Meadows, I saw a dog in the middle of the highway. We’d already picked up my truck from the Boise airport, so Kristina and I were in separate cars. I knew I needed to stop because, after 22 years of marriage, I was certain Kristina would be stopping to try and help the dog.

So, as I sat in the middle of the highway with my flashers on, I started to worry that a big semi-truck could come around the corner at any moment and hit Kristina or the dog. Thank goodness it was midnight, so traffic was light. To say it was unsafe is an understatement, but you can’t stop Kristina from helping an animal in need.

After five or ten minutes of trying to catch the dog, another woman stopped to help. There was a very small shoulder where both of their cars could fit mostly off the road. I had to drive a little further down to find a bigger shoulder where my truck would fit.

By the time I got back to them, they had one dog in the car and were trying to get a second dog in, too—which they finally managed to do.

We all stopped in town and transferred the dogs into my truck to bring home with us for the night. Both of the dogs looked like they had been in the woods for quite a while, maybe a week or more. The way they ate the food and drank the water we gave them definitely made it seem like that was the case. Luckily, we had a horse stall in our barn where we could keep the dogs safe (and away from our dogs).

The dogs were very sweet, and you could tell they had families who were probably looking for them. We were able to bring them to an animal shelter a couple days later after a bath and some more food.

For those of you who have been reading this newsletter for a while, you may remember another story like this about a dog named Gus. We found Gus in the forest, and after a couple weeks of living with us, we found his family … although after that long it was tough to give him back. 😊

Well, that story about Gus has turned into a new children’s book that Kristina is just finishing called Meant for More. It tells the story about finding Gus, finding his family, and how sad we all were to give him back … but then we found the perfect dog for our family named Fergus.

If any of you have a life experience (or experiences) that you would like to turn into a book, I’m hosting a 4-Day Book Writing Challenge starting Monday, June 7th with Kelly Notaras, where we’re going to teach you how to go from an idea to a book.

I have found that there are so many people who have thought about writing a book based on a life experience, lessons they have learned, or an idea they have for a novel or cookbook … but they don’t know how to take the next steps to get the book completed and published. So, that’s exactly what you will learn in the 4-Day Book Writing Challenge.

If you would like to learn more about the Challenge, follow this link.

I hope you all have a wonderful week ahead and a fun-filled Memorial Day tomorrow for all of you in the U.S.

Wishing You the Best,
Reid Tracy
