Take care of your furry friends as the world opens up with a bang!

On the Fourth of July many dog owners deal with howling, barking, and generally anxious dogs during fireworks. Independence Day is the day when the highest number of animals run away. But just what are the dogs afraid of?

“It can be the smell. It can be the noise and the flashes of the light,” says Judy Morgan, DVM, of Dr. Judy Morgan’s Naturally Healthy Pets. Your dog may “tremble, shake, shiver, howl, and bark — some of them get frantic.” How can we help them feel safe?

Tips for keeping your dog safe during fireworks:

  • Make sure your animals are microchipped.
  • Walk them during daylight hours to avoid times when fireworks are likely to be set off.
  • Close windows and curtains to muffle the sound of fireworks.
  • Put on soothing music or TV or white noise.
  • Create some hiding places or a den in your home.
  • Keep toys in the safe area to keep your pet distracted.
  • Give CBD at least one hour before dusk.

How do I help my horse during fireworks?

  • Find out in advance if your neighbors plan to shoot fireworks so you can prepare.
  • Most horses feel better in a herd, so if they're normally out at night, let them stay in their pasture with friends during the light show, but check the fence line in advance.
  • If kept in a stall, be sure to check for things he might get injured by. Do not stand in the stall with him. You may be injured.
  • Keep their routine as normal as possible.
  • Play quiet music in the barn.
  • Give CBD at least one hour before dusk.
