Craft made clear: your guide to craft drinks

new in

The world of craft drinks is so rich and varied, it’s easy to sometimes be a little stumped as to what to order, or to put your finger on what it is you like.

When one IPA can remind you of tropical fruit and another one fresh pine, it’s handy to know what to look out for with your beer. Learning about ingredients, styles, the breweries that make them and even a dash of history is a great way to get to grips with what’s in your glass and enjoy it to its fullest potential.

We’re here to help make craft clear, and today we’ll answer a couple of common questions that newcomers to craft (and even some more seasoned drinkers) often ask.

Why do craft drinks cost more?

There are a few reasons why craft drinks can cost more than mass-produced alternatives, but as a top line it comes down to ingredients, time and resource. Beers like Pale Ales and IPAs often go heavy on hops imported from around the world, while other styles can involve complex blends of malts, fresh fruit additions and even whisky barrel aging.

While some drinks can be created and packaged quickly, others take more time and doing this also means that valuable space is taken up by something they’re not yet able to sell, which is often factored into the cost. Ultimately, it’s quest for a greater quality of beer, with the best ingredients and brewed with care and attention to detail that results in the final price.

Why is it called IPA?

You might have drunk plenty of these, but did you know how India Pale Ale (IPA) got its name? The style emerged in the 1700s, when Britons living in India would pine for Pale Ales. In order to keep them in ship-shape (sorry) condition after a long voyage overseas, they were brewed with a higher hop content and ABV, to act as preservatives.

The fact that it tasted delicious too, meant that the style began to spread in popularity back in Britain. After fading from the limelight for a while, the American craft beer revolution and the subsequent global revival of craft has seen the style become hugely popular once more, with an array of substyles that you’ve no doubt had a try of over the years.

Has all that reading got you thirsty for an IPA? Well, then we’ve got you covered with some tasty new treats from Polly’s Brew Co and Burnt Mill. There’s also IPA aplenty in the latest exclusive imports from Estonia’s Pühaste, as well as some showstopping Imperial Stouts for those slightly chillier evenings.

While the sun’s out, though, we couldn’t recommend a thick, fruit-packed Sour from Vault City enough. Just grab a ray of sun, shut your eyes and take a sip and it’ll be like the summer we should have had!
