Kansans paying the price for Trump’s trade war

Dear Supporter,

This week we traveled through Kansas and met some of the hardest working people I've ever met: Kansas farmers. From Topeka to McPherson, we heard about the pain they are experiencing as a result of trade and healthcare policy in Washington. The anxiety and depression farmers feel, due in part to rising healthcare costs and a decline in business - including exports - is taking a toll. We learned that sadly suicide is on the rise among farmers.

We must do better by people who work so hard to help themselves and contribute to our country.

When I asked what they need from Washington, farmers’ answers were consistent and clear: they want reliable policy. They want to know the rules of the game when it comes to trade, health care, and taxes. Farmers need and deserve that predictability.

So why are these and other issues going unaddressed? Why aren't both political parties making more of an effort to understand the kinds of struggles the heart of America is facing?

The people of Kansas deserve to be heard. That’s only possible if we disrupt our broken politics. That’s why I’m exploring a potential run as a centrist independent.

I'm enjoying listening and learning from the people I'm meeting along the way. Thanks for joining me on the journey. Next stop: Arizona.

From the road with gratitude,

Howard
